Last year I wrote the song “Write My Name.” Also a version for mixed choir, and on a protest for Gaza on the Grote Markt in Groningen in September. I have now made some progress with this project. Based on the project concept, I decided to create a triptych for Gaza. In consultation with poet Zeina Azzam, I set two more poems to music in addition to “Write My Name”: “No Longer,” about the starvation of the people in Gaza, and “20,000 Children Killed in Gaza,” about the genocide. When that was finished, I came to the conclusion while talking with friends that the element of hope was missing. I asked Zeina if she had a poem about hope for the Palestinians in Gaza. She didn't, but she was willing to write a new poem for this project. And so the fourth song came into being: “Together,” about hope. Now I can present the project: “Four Songs for Gaza,” with the songs “Write My Name,” “No Longer,” “20,000 Children Killed in Gaza,” and “Together.” My intention is to have these Four Songs for Gaza sung as much and as often as possible.
That is why, in addition to the versions for mixed choir SATB, I also have versions for solo voice, for women's choir SSAA and men's choir TTBB, all with piano accompaniment. I have agreed with Zeina Azzam that everything will be available for free!
